So many posts about the Olsens this week as they announced their first “adult” perfume. Elizabeth & James will launch Nirvana White and Nirvana Black this January, and you can only get it at $ephora . . . Read the full story here.

It’s pretty incredible that they have two thriving and cool brands when you think of their roots . . . not many child stars go on to make waves in another industry, let alone remain successful in the entertainment world.

We are defining (or shall I say redefining) who the Marais Girl is. The initial part of this process was to answer questions about her. Some of them I expected and had a very clear and immediate answer for (how old is she, what does she do for a living, where does she shop?), and others were very specific and a bit trickier to nail down. My method for finding these answers was to start collecting visual references from books, blogs, old scrap books, and anywhere I could find bits and pieces I felt conveyed a part of who the Marais Girl is. I collected a few hundred images and then edited them down until they visually described the Marais Girl.

A few paintings of Helen Frankenthaler’s made it into the final selection. Each one is so effortlessly beautiful, which is an aspect of her work she has been criticized for. But to me all of her work is highly emotional and complex. It is art you’d want in your home; makes you happy; energizes you; and is interesting to look at for years and years. And that is the art the Marais Girl dreams about adding to her collection. If she could choose a piece (hell yes!)?

Captured on a disposable camera . . .

First stop, coffee in my travel clothes + Beatle Boots (#lostluggage)

Back porches and gardens aplenty

Blake, the Savannah local (slash tour guide extraordinaire)

Hangin’ in Monterey Square in my Jitney Wedges

On a recent excursion to Savannah, Georgia I had my first ever truly Southern experience. Over the past year, my friend Blake has sent me frequent invitations, cheap flight notifications, and photographic tours via email. I’d read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and I’d been told it was the most beautiful city in the US. That seemed a tall order, but after 30 minutes on a bike in the Historic District, I had to agree. The city is laid out on a grid around squares, 22 of them. By squares, I mean rectangular blocks whose perimeters are lined with gorgeous 18th and 19th century mansions. Sadly, this picturesque district became a low-income neighborhood in the 1900′s, with most homes becoming dilapidated and uncared for. That is, until restoration expert Jim Williams came to the rescue and began to transform the neighborhood back to its former glory. Including his very own Mercer House (pictured above). Today the Historic District, and city in general, is a hub for artists (rent is literally a fraction of what we New Yorkers are accustomed to) and old fashioned Southern livin (fried green tomatoes and rocking chairs aplenty). I am a fan.

See you again soon, Savannah!

Vintage dress worn with Marais USA Hyde Pumps

A Claire McCardell shirtdress is something I’ve always wanted in my wardrobe. I snatched this one up at the Chelsea Flea for 45 smackers a few weeks ago and have been waiting for the perfect day to wear it. Then came terrible weather, so I donned it amidst the rain and fog yesterday. A piece of clothing like this puts you in a good mood! Love the black button-down front. Love the soft cotton candy pink color. And love that it’s pretty worn in, so I don’t have to wear it carefully and daintily. This dress was made for summer livin! Love!

Let’s face it, we have all grown to style just about everything in our lives to be photo worthy. If you care to learn from the pro’s (and by pro’s, we mean the killer combo of Aran Goyoaga and Sunday Suppers), then you may want to consider this upcoming 2 day Foraging and Styling Workshop:

Day One:  Meet at Grand Central and travel to the property upstate to gather seasonal berries, mushrooms and greens on-site.

Day Two: Food styling and photography workshop in Williamsburg, followed by a feast incorporating the fruits (and mushrooms and greens) of your labor.

Tickets are now on sale here in very limited quantities. An excursion like this doesn’t come cheaply, but trust us, it is worth it.

See you there?

Had we not been in the midst of NYFW, team Marais would be at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show.  Next year, we will be there!
